Bryan Cantwell

Implementation Director bc@counts.design Bryan Cantwell leads design development, contract documentation, and construction implementation efforts at Counts Studio. His innovative approach to landscape technology, material expression, and construction implementation are an invaluable part of the firms collaborative design work. Mr. Cantwell led the implementation efforts for Qianshan New City, a 40-acre on-structure civic landscape located between 60 high-rise towers for 15,000 people, in Zhuhai, China. He also lead the Beijing International Garden Expo, the Moore Square Comprehensive Tree and Soil Strategy in Raleigh, North Carolina and most recently, he led the design for a floating mixed-use village in a central Bangkok waterway, containing housing, retail, a museum, and a one-acre park, all built atop floating structures. Prior to joining Counts Studio, Mr. Cantwell was a Senior Design Supervisor for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation where he oversaw the construction of over 30 projects a year. An expert in urban landscape design, construction, and restoration, his experience includes ecologically-based Brownfield remediation, habitat restoration, and the naturalization of the Bronx River and Randall’s Island. Mr. Cantwell’s extensive experience spans a broad range of typologies, including waterfront development, urban design, public parks, streetscapes, hospitality and resorts. He was the project designer for the Emeryville Marina, in Berkeley, California, the New School for Landscape Architecture at U.C. Davis, California, two miles of pedestrian improvements for the State Capitol in Oklahoma, Magoria Park in Barcelona, Suzhou Village retail development, Suzhou, China, and a prototype for modular cultural landscape centers built throughout Chile. Mr. Cantwell’s creative accomplishments have been widely published throughout the world. He was included in the “Top 5 to Watch” by the UK Landscape Institute in 2012. Mr. Cantwell has been an invited critic to design reviews at leading universities, and leads technology research efforts at Counts Studio. He studied architecture, sculpture, and landscape architecture, receiving his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Oklahoma State University.
